Psychotherapy in Richmond upon Thames

Vernon Stokoe

MSc, BA (Hons), PsyDip

Individual therapy offers a space to step outside the pressure and momentum of daily life, and to reflect more deeply on how you relate to yourself, your relationships, your work, and the direction your life is taking.

I work with individuals navigating heartbreak, emotional overwhelm, career and business pressure, questions around meaning and identity, and periods of transition where life no longer feels fully aligned or sustainable. Much of my work is with ambitious, creative, and psychologically minded people who recognise the importance of maintaining balance whilst pursuing demanding professional or personal goals.

My approach is thoughtful, exploratory, and person-centred, drawing heavily from relational psychology, attachment theory, and Jungian ideas around individuation and self-development.

Psychotherapy and relationship counselling quote about recognising repeating emotional and relationship patterns

What Brings People to Therapy?

  • Feeling stuck in the same emotional patterns
  • Relationship difficulties and disconnection
  • Anxiety, overthinking, or emotional overwhelm
  • Low self-esteem or self-criticism
  • Difficulty trusting others or feeling emotionally safe
  • Feeling disconnected, numb, or lost
  • Struggles with boundaries, intimacy, or identity
  • A desire for deeper self-understanding and personal growth

Therapy offers space to explore these questions more deeply, helping you better understand yourself, your relationships, and the patterns shaping your emotional life.

What can psychotherapy help with?

People come to psychotherapy for many different reasons. This may include anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, stress, life transitions, loss, self-esteem, emotional overwhelm, or a general feeling of being disconnected from themselves or others.

Psychotherapy can also help people develop greater self-awareness, understand recurring emotional patterns, and explore parts of themselves that may have been difficult to face alone.

Rather than offering quick fixes, therapy is often about creating deeper understanding, emotional clarity, and more sustainable ways of relating to yourself and your life.

You do not need to be in crisis to begin therapy

A lot of people delay therapy because they believe they need to reach a breaking point before seeking support. In reality, psychotherapy can be valuable long before things become overwhelming or unmanageable.

Many people begin therapy because they feel stuck, disconnected from themselves, emotionally exhausted, or aware that certain patterns in their life keep repeating. Others simply want a deeper understanding of themselves and the way they relate to the world around them.

Therapy can provide a space for reflection, emotional growth, and meaningful change, even when it is difficult to put into words exactly what feels wrong.

Why do I keep feeling stuck in the same patterns?

Many emotional patterns begin as ways of coping. A person may learn to withdraw, please others, stay guarded, overthink, or avoid conflict because at some point these responses helped them feel safer or more in control.

Over time, those same patterns can begin to create stress, distance, anxiety, or relationship difficulties. What once protected you may now be getting in the way of feeling connected, understood, or emotionally free.

Psychotherapy can help you understand where these patterns came from, why they continue to repeat, and how to relate to yourself and others in a more conscious and compassionate way.

Why do I feel emotionally numb?

Many people experience emotional numbness without fully understanding why. Feeling disconnected from your emotions can develop gradually through stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties, burnout, or unresolved emotional pain.

For some people, emotional shutdown becomes a way of coping with difficult experiences. Over time, this can create a sense of distance from yourself, your feelings, and the people around you.

Psychotherapy can help you reconnect with your emotional experience, better understand what you are carrying internally, and develop a stronger sense of emotional connection and self-awareness.
